In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
