Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
