The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
