Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
